THE LAND'S END. My birthday was coming up and the plan was to be in Kanyakumari (formerly Cape Comorin),the southernmost tip of India and the blending of the three seas-Arabian sea, Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal. We stayed in the most luxury hotel (~$7) at the very tip of the land, our windows looking onto the crashing waves and the extravagant memorials
on the rocks not far from the shore. The main memorial was to the Indian philosopher Swami
Vivekananda who first brought Hinduism to the US when he spoke at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. Before setting out to conquer the West, he had meditated on one of these rocks for three days. Ironically, a weird mausoleum now stands on his favorite rock, with crowds of festively dressed local and foreign tourists and pilgrims posing for a picture as soon as they get off the ferry...
